Hurghada is Egypt's Red Sea holiday capital. Here's how to make the most of it beyond your resort.

Hurghada is Egypt's largest Red Sea resort city — a strip of hotels, beaches, dive centers and cafés stretching 40 km along the coast. It's warm year-round, budget-friendly and a paradise for divers and snorkelers.

Best beaches

  • Sahl Hasheesh — quieter, upscale resort area.
  • Makadi Bay — family-friendly beaches with reefs offshore.
  • Old Town (El Dahar) — traditional Egyptian atmosphere and cheaper food.
  • El Gouna — 20 minutes north; upscale lagoon town with kite-surfing and nightlife.

Snorkeling & diving

Hurghada is a popular diving destination, with trips to reefs and wrecks offered by local dive centres. Compare current course and excursion prices directly, checking what equipment, transfers, certification fees and insurance are included. There is no verified basis for a fixed price comparison with Europe.

Day trips

  • Luxor day trip — 4-hour drive each way; long but worthwhile.
  • Cairo & Pyramids — usually a 2-day overnight tour.
  • Desert safaris — quad bikes, Bedouin dinners, stargazing.
  • Submarine and glass-bottom boat trips for non-divers.

Where to eat

El Gouna's Marina is a foodie strip. In Hurghada proper, Moby Dick, White Elephant and Star Fish are perennial favorites. All-inclusive resorts are fine but leave the resort at least once for real Egyptian food.

Getting online

Mobile data is generally available in developed areas of Hurghada, but coverage varies by location, network, plan and device. Do not rely on 5G or a signal offshore: download maps and essential information before boat trips or desert excursions.

Frequently asked questions

Yes — it's one of the safest destinations in Egypt with resort security and family-focused amenities.
Can I do a day trip from Hurghada to Luxor?
Yes but it's a long day — the drive is 4 hours each way. Two days is more comfortable.
Is Hurghada good for snorkeling?
