Uber is widely used in Egypt and is the safest, most transparent way for tourists to get around. Fares are fixed upfront, drivers are rated and tracked, and payment can be made by card or cash. You'll need a working data connection — an Egypt eSIM is ideal.

Where Uber operates

Uber's own Egypt city list currently covers Cairo, Alexandria, Hurghada and Damietta. Coverage is densest in Cairo and Alexandria, where a car is usually a few minutes away. In Luxor, Aswan and parts of Sinai you may need a different app or a pre-arranged driver — check availability in the app for your exact location.

Prices vs regular taxis

The app shows the fare before you accept the ride, which removes the negotiation that comes with a street taxi. Prices rise at peak hours, in bad weather and during big events. Fuel and transport costs moved several times in 2026, so treat any fare you read online as a rough guide and rely on the price quoted in the app.

Payment

You can pay by card (added in the app) or with cash. Cash is popular in Egypt and drivers are used to making change. Tips are appreciated but not expected.

inDrive: proposing your own fare

inDrive is another ride-hailing app used in Egypt, and it works differently from Uber and Careem. Instead of the app setting the price, you enter your pickup and destination, propose the fare you want to pay, and nearby drivers either accept it or send a counter-offer. You then choose an offer based on price, rating and vehicle. According to inDrive, the service runs in around 30 Egyptian cities, including Cairo, Alexandria, Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh, Luxor, Aswan, Mansoura, Damietta and Ismailia.

• Tolls and airport fees are not included in the fare you agree and are paid by the passenger.
